Attending Vivo Sinfonietta for the first time?

No need to worry! The following are answers to frequently-asked questions about Symphony-going, designed to make your first symphony concert a pleasant one. Click on the question to display the answer.

What is chamber music?

Chamber music is a form of classical music. Vivo Sinfonietta is different from other orchestras because it is by definition, a chamber music orchestra. Chamber music is written specifically for a smaller group of instruments which could traditionally be accommodated in a palace chamber. The University Lutheran Chapel is an ideal setting, replicating the intimate feel of a palace chamber. Because of this, people are able to feel like they are part of the music and not merely listening to a recording.

Do I need to know the music before I attend a concert?

No. One of the joys of concert-going is being introduced to a great piece of music you’ve never heard before. Some patrons find they appreciate the performance more if they listen to the piece prior to the concert. Many members of the audience find it enhances their enjoyment if they take the time to read the notes in the concert program about the composer and the pieces to be played.

What should I wear?

Though dress pants/ khakis paired with a nice top or sweater are always considered appropriate attire, we at Vivo do not enforce a dress code. All patrons, regardless of their dress, are welcome to come and enjoy our music. The most important thing is for you to be comfortable!

When should I arrive?

We suggest you arrive approximately 20 minutes before the concert is scheduled to begin. That will allow time for you to find a seat, relax, read the concert program and watch as the musicians take the stage.

Can I bring my children?

Children of all ages are welcome to our concerts. Any child over the age of one must have a ticket

When should I clap?

It is generally proper to clap after a piece is complete. Your concert program will list how many movements a piece has. There is usually a 15-30 second pause in between movements. If all else fails, you can always wait for the rest of the audience to clap before applauding.

Where can I go after the concert?

We invite all our patrons to join us for an afterglow at the Common Cup; a full service coffee house located in the lower level of the University Lutheran Chapel. The Common Cup serves on the best local fare including coffee, espresso, desserts and pastries, grilled sandwiches and fresh salads. We invite you to sip a latte or indulge in one of our delicious pastries.

Is smoking allowed at the University Lutheran Chapel?

The University Lutheran Chapel is a non-smoking facility.
